Dare to embrace
differences
In the new global economy products, services, money, businesses and
people are not bound within national borders. They move relatively free
between countries and cultures. In this global economy companies face
new challenges. These challenges are not only economical or technical.
Human resources are becoming more and more important to become or stay
a competitive and profitable organisation.
I believe that organisations can become more successful when they know
and properly manage the differences in the competencies, skills and
knowledge of their people. Combining cultural or personal differences
will lead to new ways to define problems and more creative, efficient
and effective solutions.
I believe that in a global economy one of the main organisational
challenges will be using people’s competencies, skills and
knowledge and create a (world-wide) learning organisation that uses its
people more effective. Companies should build on people’s
strengths in stead of focussing on people's weaknesses.
When you want to use the different competencies, skills and knowledge
of people, you first have to know what they are. Insight in
intercultural attitudes, habits, knowledge and skills therefore is
important. Maarten van Beek does research in aspects of leadership as
teambuilding, entrepreneurship, coaching, target setting, etc. in an
intercultural perspective. This research should help companies to
define the differences in their human capital and use it to become more
competitive in the market place.
Next to intercultural leadership Maarten is interested in the
intercultural aspect of a learning organisation. People of different
cultures learn different. When companies create an international
learning environment they should be aware of these differences.
Differences should not be seen as problems, but as challenges in which
people can learn from each other and used each other knowledge, skills
and competencies over national borders.
